Buying a Car for a Chicagoland Commute

Where you drive matters as much as what you buy. On a long interstate commute — I-55 or I-80 out of Will County, the Jane Addams from Elgin, the Tri-State out of Lake County — a higher odometer reading is less concerning than it looks, because highway miles are easier miles than stop-and-go city ones. If most of your driving is surface streets, weight service history and low-speed transmission behavior more heavily.

This page shows cars only — sedans, coupes, hatchbacks, wagons and convertibles. Crossovers and SUVs have their own page, and there are more than twice as many of them.

Which cars here are the most fuel-efficient?

Compact sedans and hatchbacks are your best bet in this category. If fuel economy is the priority, our hybrid inventory is on a separate page.

Do you stock manual transmissions?

A few — currently about ten manuals across the whole inventory, out of more than 900 vehicles. Filter by transmission, or call and we'll tell you what's on the lots.

Is a car with over 100,000 miles a bad idea?

Not on its own. Plenty of our lower-priced cars have crossed six figures, and how a car was maintained matters more than the number on the dash. Ask us for whatever service history came with the vehicle.

Can I finance an older, lower-priced car?
