Used Hybrids Across Four Chicagoland Lots

Where a Hybrid Makes the Most Sense

Hybrids recover energy every time you slow down, which is why they do their best work in congestion rather than at steady highway speed. If your day is a long, slow commute — the Stevenson from Will County, the Jane Addams from Kane County, the Tri-State out of Lake County, or I-57 and Cicero Avenue from the south suburbs — that's the use case hybrids were built for. Rideshare drivers and anyone putting on heavy city miles see the same benefit.

If your commute is short and mostly surface streets, a hybrid is still efficient, but the payback on the price premium stretches out. A small gas car may be the better total-cost buy, and we have plenty of those.

One thing to expect and not be alarmed by: fuel economy drops in deep cold, because the engine runs more to produce cabin heat and batteries are less efficient at low temperatures. That's normal behavior in a Chicago January, not a fault. Fully electric cars lose range for the same reasons.

What can you tell me about the battery on a specific car?

Call us with the stock number or VIN and we'll tell you what we know about that vehicle, including whatever service history came with it. We'd rather have that conversation before you drive out than after.

Do you carry plug-in hybrids or fully electric cars?

Occasionally. There's a plug-in Prius Prime in inventory as this is written, and fully electric cars turn up in ones and twos. Use the fuel type filter for what's actually live, or ask us to watch for one.

Are hybrids harder to service?

Hybrid-specific components require a shop equipped to work on them, and not every independent garage is. It's worth finding out which shops near you are before you buy — that's true whether you buy from us or anywhere else.
